Happy Tuesday my friends! Welcome to my weekly series “Tuesday’s with Tara Lynn”. If you happen to have read my recent blog post “Goal Digger”, you already know I have been working on setting goals for 2018 and strategies to achieve them. One of my goals under my category “Personal Development” was to read at least one book a month. That may seem like a small goal to some, but for me that is a big deal. I have always enjoyed reading, but I tend to get distracted to easily. If I try to read before bed, I end up just falling asleep. I buy books with high hopes to read them and they end up stacked up on my nightstand gathering dust. Anyone else have this same problem? That is why this year; I made the commitment to myself to dust off those books, to stop using them as coasters and to start actually reading them.
Choosing the right book to read also makes all the difference on how engaged I am. At the end of 2017, I started to follow Reese Witherspoon’s book club “Reese’s book club x hello sunshine” on Instagram. I am a big fan of her’s and if she was recommending a book, I knew it had to be good. Her December book pick was “The Last Mrs. Parrish” by Liv Constantine. I was not familiar with this author but as I started to read all the reviews on Instagram, it was clear this was one of those books when you start it, you cannot put it down. I went to two Barnes and Noble by my house and both locations were sold out. I ended up ordering it on Amazon that night. I received the book in the mail two days later and the reviews were right; I could not put it down. This is unusual for me but I was so engaged in each character, I hung on as I turned each page to find out what was going to happen next. I ended up finishing it in just a few days. When I finish such a good book, I end up feeling depressed. I do not want them to end; I think, “How will I find another book as good as the one I just read?” This motivated me to set the goal for myself to read each one of Reese’s monthly book recommendations for 2018. Her January book club recommendation is a book by Brene Brown called “Braving the Wilderness”. I have read other books by Brene Brown; they all have great messages and are just good for your soul. I downloaded “Braving the Wilderness” and I cannot wait to dive into it. Follow along with me each month to see what book I am reading from Reese’s book club and my review and recommendation on the book from the previous month.
Speaking of books that are good for the soul and mind, a friend of mine recommended that I read “Girl Code: Unlocking the Secrets to Success, Sanity and Happiness for the Female Entrepreneur” by Cara Alwill Leyba. I ended up downloading this book to Audible so I could listen to it at work in hopes it would inspire me. This book exceeded my expectations. I love the author’s outlook on female empowerment and the stories she shares from her friends on their journey to success. She talks about building confidence in yourself, reconnecting with your “why” and learning the power of connection. I could relate to the stories these women were sharing. This book made me to want to achieve more in my day job and expand my knowledge for blogging. This book inspired me to reach out to like-minded females and connect with them, to sign up for a conference where I can learn more about how to market my brand/blog and to join a local female group here in Des Moines that supports women entrepreneurs and business women. I loved the message the author sent in this book. I started to follow her on Instagram (@thechampagnediet), read her blog and I download her podcasts called “Style your Mind”. She also has other books she wrote that I am adding to my list of “must reads.” If anyone is looking to be inspired, to feel female empowerment, to learn how to find your voice and rebuild your confidence, I highly recommend this book. Take the time to read or listen and invest in yourself, I am so happy I did.
