Going UV Free

I will be the first to admit, I love to be tan.  It makes me feel better, confident and gives that extra glow.  Starting in high school I would spend hours laying in the sun soaked in baby oil. SPF and sunscreen were not in my vocabulary.  I spent years laying in tanning beds to achieve that sun kissed look.  Even thought there were warning signs telling me the harmful effects that I was exposing my skin too, I just brushed it off and didn’t pay attention.  Being tan was more important than being healthy.  It wasn’t’ until I got older that I understood how dangerous the sun can be. I watched as friends and family members struggled with skin cancer battles, the reality of what the sun and UV rays could do became real.  I knew I needed to find a healthier alternative to tanning beds.  I still wanted to have that natural sun kissed glow but without the effects from the sun or UV exposure.
Instead of the tanning bed, I started doing spray tans.  While I liked that it gave me instant color, I hated the smell it left on me, the streaks of “orange” looking color that would always be around my wrists and feet,  and as it started to fade, it left me with dry, blotchy skin.  Even though this was a better alternative to tanning beds, I was not happy with the results but I kept on going because at the time there was not another option.
Last year when I was preparing to get married, I was introduced to Traci Noll.  She is the owner of Tanique, the only UV-Free tanning salon in the Des Moines area.  Being a regular tanner herself she was on a mission to provide a safe and healthier alternative to get that gorgeous glow all year round.  Tanique does custom airbrush tanning. Her tanning solution is made with the highest quality DHA, all natural and organic ingredients, is paraben-free, gluten-free and vegan. A healthy way to get an amazing tan and protect our skin.
I scheduled my airbrush tan right before my wedding. From the second you walk into her store, the first thing you notice is how good it smells.  You don’t smell that “tanning” smell like you do at most studios.  She is always burning one of the amazing candles that she sells store.  The waiting area is ultra sleek, with modern dark grey couches, stylish pillows and a trendy coffee table.  Her waiting area is filled with fun products, from candles, to lotions that you can purchase. When you are taken back into your private room for your air brush tan, she has thought of every little detail.  From makeup removal wipes, to disposable underwear you can wear during your session.  Traci has not only created a place to come get a UV-Free, natural tan, but also an amazing environment to do it in.
I had the perfect glow on my wedding day and have continued to be a repeat customer ever since.  If I have a special occasion or I just need a pick me up in the winter months, I head to Tanique.   I vow that I will never enter another tanning bed again.  Now SPF and sunscreen are two words I don’t ignore. I have educated myself on the effects of the sun and tanning beds and what it can do to your skin.  If you are like me and have pledged to never go into another tanning bed but still long for that glow, we are lucky to have healthier alternatives like Tanique

If you have never tried airbrush tanning I can’t recommend Tanique enough.  Traci will walk you through your session and make you feel completely comfortable the whole time.  The sessions are affordable and you walk out of there with a healthy glow.  If you try it and fall in love with it like I did she is now also offering monthly memberships.  Now we can all have that amazing sun kissed glow without the harmful effects of the sun or UV rays thanks to Tanique!

  1. It is my goal to go with you and try this alternative. No more tanning booths for me either after my cancer removal.
Being sick these past months have added to my paleness and don’t feel like myself.
Let me know when you go again!
